His still-lifes made the access to his book a bit easier for me. I am looking at his images, sense the historical meaning of some of the personalities found back in the archives, believe to recognize the construction drawing of a incinerator furnace, or the layout of a concentration camp. I see masses marching and I see men in uniforms, I see propaganda icons and ugly apartment decorations that turn into eye candy through Schmidt’s photography. My enjoyment of the aestheticisation of the ugly gets some nourishment here. "Unity”: a gloomy book with moments of dread referring to German history. Ich betrachte die Bilder, ahne die zeitgeschichtliche Bedeutung einiger der aus den Zeitungsarchiven gefischten historischen Persönlichkeiten, meine die Konstruktionszeichnungen eines Verbrennungsofens zu erkennen, oder den Aufriss eines Konzentrationslagers, sehe Massenaufmärsche und Soldaten, Propagandaikonen, und hässliche Wohnungsdekorationen, die durch Schmidts Aufnahmen zur Augenweide werden. Meine Freude an der Ästhetisierung des Hässlichen bekommt hier Material. I own several books by Michael Schmidt. Somewhere along the road I realized that he in fact is occupied with Germany, with German reality connected with German history, maybe more than anybody else her in this country. But the deciding factor for acquiring his books were his images, not what he was occupied with. Michael Schmidt findet immer wieder eine neue Sprache, für das was er sagen möchte. Gemeinsam sind seinen Bilder ihre silbrig graue Farbigkeit, gemeinsam auch das Thema Deutschland.
