Fig.18 Antonio Rusica´s Accident,1957 Trecastagni, Siciliy, Italy
Antonio Rusica, a fisherman,
was saved from a storm at sea and made this Ex-Voto,
a votive offering, which he donated to his church as a sign of gratitude.
The tradition of making Ex-Votos, depicting real life tales of survival,
is common throughout Italy.
These visual benedictions catalogue contemporary disasters;
motor-car accidents; abnormal births, gun-shot wounds,
all of them every day near-death events.
